“Arrivals + Departures” - interactive sculpture and digital media takeover

  • Somerset House Strand London, England, WC2R 1LA United Kingdom (map)

Suzanne Dhaliwal, climate justice creative and campaigner, will host a takeover of the Arrivals + Departures boards to honour the ancestors, past and present, of the environmental and climate justice movements, who are often left out of the narrative of mainstream activism and green movements. Honouring the names of those who are often invisible, but central to current climate movements which have emboldened the world to action, is a departure point for us to have a wider discussion about the role of culture & art in the erasure and amplification of climate activists, community organisers and land defenders.

Arrivals + Departures is an interactive public installation about birth, death and the journey in-between by YARA + DAVINA, first opening at Somerset House, London from 10th September to 10th October 2020.

Everyone is invited to participate in this event, please add your own names of environmental and climate justice ancestors, past, present and future with us https://www.arrivalsanddepartures.net/

Taking the recognisable form of two station or airport arrivals and departures boards, the artwork invites the public to share the names of people who have arrived and departed, as a way to celebrate a birth, someone living, or commemorate a death. These submitted names are of people that are important to the participants, personally or politically, and can be shared with the help of a steward at the boards, or online. While the project was planned to open in April and tour the UK, it was postponed due to Covid-19, now taking on a new resonance and urgency.
